Sore Throat

Most sore throats are viral and self-limited. Learn key symptoms, when to call, and simple treatments that soothe pain and support faster, comfortable recovery.

Understanding Sore Throat (Pharyngitis)

A sore throat is inflammation of the back of the throat that causes pain, scratchiness, or discomfort—especially when swallowing. It’s one of the most common reasons for doctor visits and is usually caused by a viral infection (like a cold or the flu). Sometimes, bacteria such as Streptococcus (strep throat) are responsible. Most cases are mild and resolve on their own, but identifying the cause helps guide the right care and prevent complications.

What Is a Sore Throat?

Pharyngitis refers to irritation and inflammation of the throat. Viral infections are the most common cause. Bacterial infections (notably strep), allergies, dry air, irritants, and voice strain can also contribute.

Common Symptoms

  • Pain, scratchiness, or burning in the throat
  • Pain that worsens when swallowing or talking
  • Redness in the back of the throat
  • Swollen lymph nodes in the neck
  • Hoarseness or voice changes
  • Fever, fatigue, or body aches (especially with viral infections)
  • White patches on the tonsils (more common with strep throat)

Call your healthcare provider if your sore throat lasts longer than five days, is accompanied by high fever, difficulty swallowing, or a rash.

What Causes a Sore Throat?

  • Viral infections (most common)
  • Bacterial infections such as strep throat
  • Allergies or postnasal drip
  • Dry air or environmental irritants (smoke, pollution)
  • Vocal strain or overuse

Understanding the cause helps determine whether antibiotics, supportive care, or natural remedies are appropriate.

How Is It Treated?

Most sore throats—especially viral—improve within a week with rest and self-care.

  • Hydrate with water, warm teas, and broths
  • Gargle warm salt water to soothe irritation
  • Try honey and lemon in warm water for natural relief
  • Use a humidifier to keep airways moist
  • Lozenges or throat sprays can reduce pain and dryness
  • Prioritize adequate rest to support immune recovery

If your provider suspects strep or another bacterial infection, antibiotics may be prescribed. Always complete the full course.

Preventing Sore Throats

  • Wash hands often, especially during cold and flu season
  • Avoid sharing utensils, cups, or toothbrushes
  • Stay hydrated and keep home humidity comfortable
  • Support immunity with balanced nutrition, quality sleep, and stress management
  • Avoid smoking and secondhand smoke
