Understanding Sinus Infections (Sinusitis)
A sinus infection (sinusitis) occurs when the air-filled spaces around your nose and eyes become inflamed and swollen. This blocks normal mucus drainage and leads to pressure, congestion, and discomfort. Sinusitis often follows a cold or allergies, but bacteria, viruses, or irritants can also play a role.
What Is a Sinus Infection?
Sinusitis ranges from short-lived (acute) to persistent (chronic). Many cases are mild and resolve on their own, but recurrent or long-lasting symptoms may need medical care—especially when allergy or structural factors keep inflammation going.
Common Symptoms
- Nasal congestion or stuffiness
- Thick yellow or green mucus
- Facial pressure or pain (eyes, cheeks, or forehead)
- Headache that worsens when bending forward
- Postnasal drip, sore throat, or cough
- Fatigue, reduced sense of smell, or mild fever
Contact your provider if symptoms last longer than 10 days, or if fever, worsening pain, or swelling around the eyes develops.
What Causes Sinusitis?
Your sinuses normally produce mucus to trap dust, germs, and allergens. When passages are blocked, fluid can build up and allow germs to grow. Common triggers include:
- Viral respiratory infections (colds, flu)
- Allergies (seasonal or environmental)
- Air pollutants or smoke
- Structural issues (e.g., deviated septum)
How Is It Treated?
- Viral sinusitis: Usually clears within 7–10 days—focus on comfort care.
- Bacterial sinusitis: Antibiotics may be considered if symptoms are severe, persistent, or worsening.
- Allergy-related: Antihistamines, nasal sprays, and trigger management can help.
Self-care for relief:
- Hydrate to thin mucus
- Use saline sprays or nasal rinses
- Apply warm compresses to ease pressure
- Rest and support immunity with nutrient-dense foods and adequate sleep
Preventing Future Infections
- Keep nasal passages clear with regular saline rinses
- Manage allergies proactively
- Use a humidifier during dry months
- Avoid smoke and strong chemical fumes
- Strengthen immune health with nutrition, hydration, movement, and stress balance
