Obesity is a complex, chronic medical condition — not simply a matter of willpower. It results from a combination of biological, behavioral, environmental, and psychosocial factors that interact in unique ways for each person. 🧬 1. Biological & Genetic Factors

Genetics play a major role in determining how our bodies regulate weight. Studies show that 40–70% of body weight variability can be attributed to genetics.

Appetite regulation: Variations in genes affecting leptin, ghrelin, and melanocortin receptors can influence hunger and fullness cues.

Metabolic rate: Some people naturally burn calories more slowly due to inherited metabolic differences.

Fat storage patterns: Genetics can determine where fat is stored (e.g., abdominal vs. peripheral).

Chronic conditions like hypothyroidism, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), insulin resistance, and sleep apnea can also promote weight gain or make weight loss more difficult. (Locke 2015; Goodarzi 2018; Loos 2020)

Irregular eating patterns: Skipping meals or eating late at night affects insulin and cortisol balance.

Liquid calories: Sweetened beverages and alcohol are common hidden sources of excess calories.

Certain medications are known to cause weight gain, including some antidepressants, antipsychotics, corticosteroids, and insulin or beta-blockers. Hormonal changes such as menopause, andropause, and Cushing’s syndrome can also alter metabolism and fat distribution. (Apovian 2015; Bray 2017)


💪 7. Physical Inactivity

Sedentary lifestyles — prolonged sitting, limited exercise, and reduced daily movement — contribute to lower energy expenditure and muscle loss, both of which impair metabolism.
